Mount Gay Extra Old Rum
Mount Gay Black Barrel | Rum Ratings
More Traditional Mount Gay drinkers bemoaned the addition of this new rum. Personally, I think the newer presentation, first seen on the Gold and Silver Eclipse bottles was a much needed update. It brings the brand into the 21st century. Tales of how great the older tasting bottles are present on most rum forums. Rose tinted spectacles truly are a force of nature. However, what cannot be denied is that the Black Barrel is a completely different beast to the Eclipse Black. Having never been fortunate to try the Eclipse Black I cannot do a backwards comparison.
The XO notation on the Mount Gay is pretty standard across the rum and spirits industry to denote an aged spirit without actually noting how old it is! The master blender at Mount Gay is in the shape of Allen Smith who has been with the distillery over 20 years. Again this adds a guarantee as to what you will get in the glass.
A mellow, balanced rum from Barbados, Mount Gay Extra Old has been matured for at least eight years, creating subtle, fruity flavours. Notes of ripe bananas, freshly-baked pastry, toast and warm spices build into a smooth, rounded finish. Using the extensive natural resources of the Caribbean island, Sir John Gay quickly started using molasses to create rich, balanced rums. Nose : Stacks of fruit: raisins, prunes and sultanas with touches of banana and pineapple.
